Best new creative ads of the week: Flipkart, Channel4 and more
Every week, I attempt to share a curated list of best new creative ads. Getting an ad noticed is itself a big achievement. Only a handful of ads are noticed and then appreciated, discussed or shared. In this week’s compilation: ads from Flipkart, Channel4 of UK and more.
Flipkart & Netflix: entertainment ka pardah
Earlier this year, Flipkart announced a partnership that enables Flipkart Plus members to earn a Netflix Mobile Plan every month through regular shopping on the platform, without a separate subscription or bundled recharge. The opportunity was turned into a fun film anchored on an age-old habit in India – peeping into the neighbour’s house through the window. In tightly packed apartments and free-standing houses it is common to observe goings-on and even stare at TV screens.
The context is brought alive in fun film through a familiar situation of a prospective groom visiting a girl’s house. The offer comes alive with humour and an activation idea: a curtain that acts as a screen between the two homes and makes signing up for the offer easy. In an era where streaming is more through mobile screens and hence the necessity of watching other people’s TV is removed, this still is a clutter-breaking idea. Loved it.

Channel4: Apocalypse
Apocalypse is a modern survival show on Channel4 UK, that drops ordinary people into an abandoned town and challenges them to survive. A new set of promotional films for the show take dark humour to the limits. The central premise: humans might be a tad poorly prepared if and when apocalypse strikes.

Alpha Bull Rum: dear Monk
An Instagram post (not a paid print ad) was shared widely among ad agency groups on WhatsApp recently. It also made its way to LinkedIn later. The post – pretty much like a static print ad is well written. What’s even more interesting is the context: when FSSAI’s action pulled six alcohol brands off shelves, Old Monk among them, Alpha Bull Rum’s response was an open letter; not to consumers, but to Old Monk itself.

Raga by Titan: your way is beautiful
There is a school of advertising which doesn’t rely on a brand’s features and benefits alone to create consumer appeal. The brand takes a stand about an issue or cause and that can endear itself to its target audience. A new, well-crafted ad for Raga by Titan falls in that space. The film keeps us engaged right through and the penny-drop moment brings a smile. I was wondering about the tenuous brand connect. My wife (far removed from the world of advertising) who saw the film said that it is about ‘saying the right thing at the right time in the right manner’. As some have said on LinkedIn, it has a deep inner meaning about how you carry yourself, accessories and all. Nice.

Aashirvaad: Maveli with a twist
While discussions around Onam tend to get toxic on some social platforms, good to see a light hearted ad with a product connect. Stereotyping is common in our popular culture – be it in movies or ads. The pot-bellied Maveli is shown as a fit person linked to the product story.

Kia: a new breed of hybrid
Post-production and special effects make such a big difference. A hybrid car meets a centaur and hilarity ensues while creating awareness about the car brand. Irreverently Aussie.
